Step Right Up: Weekend Picks
Friday March 24, 2006
It's the first official weekend of Spring. Your options include the circus, a virtue & vice party, a new film opening, and competitive arm-wrestling. Bring it on!
Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus
The Greatest Show on Earth comes to Madison Square Garden from March 23 through April 17. Marvel at the flying trapeze. Delight in the spectacle. Gorge on cotton candy.
New Lost City: A Night of Vice, Virtue and Everything in Between
Venture to a hidden rooftop behind an anonymous door in Manhattan for a party with Complacent Nation. Groove to live music in genres from "grime gospel" to "queercore rock" -- along with beats from the coolest DJs around. In keeping with the vice/virtue theme, come dressed as your own idea of angelic or devilish.
Film Opening: The Beauty Academy of Kabul
This film-festival favorite documentary follows a group of American hairdressers to Afghanistan, where they teach Afghan women the arts of cut and color and learn a lot in return. The filmmakers will be on hand for Q&A after the 7 PM shows on Friday and Saturday at the Angelika.
Big Apple Grapple
Competitive arm wrestling has moved beyond the bad Stallone film. At the USS Intrepid on Saturday, you can see the world's best arm wrestlers fight for the titles of King and Queen of Arms and a $500 prize. Dig up your giant foam finger and root on your favorites. You know Sly would approve.
