BBQ, Medieval Plants, and Kosher Egg Rolls

Friday June 9, 2006
Looks like the rain will finally go away just in time for you to enjoy some great NYC outdoor events this weekend.

  • Big Apple Barbecue Block Party -- The 4th Annual Big Apple Barbecue Block party brings America's finest barbecue to Manhattan for two delicious days. Ten of the nation's best pitmasters will smoke bbq specialties including ribs, pulled pork, and brisket for your dining pleasure. Live music on the outdoor stage will include jazz, blues and bluegrass. You can even check out bbq seminars and learn how to make your own prizewinning pork. Admission is free and proceeds from the sale of food and drinks benefit the Madison Square Park Conservancy. Just be prepared to wait in line for your bbq -- the mouthwatering aromas always draw a crowd.
When: Saturday, June 10 and Sunday, June 11.
Where: Madison Square Park (between 23rd and 28th Streets and Fifth and Madison Avenues) and Madison Avenue from 23rd to 26th Streets.

  • Garden Day at the Cloisters -- Spend the day in the Cloisters' beautiful medieval gardens and enjoy tours, a family workshop (in English and Spanish), and special gallery talks. Learn about the many uses of plants in the Middle Ages as well as their symbolism in art and literature. Directions and Visitor Info for the Cloisters.

  • Egg Rolls and Egg Creams Block Party -- This unique Lower East Side block party celebrates the culture and traditions of both the Eastern European Jews who built the Eldridge Street Synagogue and the Chinese immigrants who moved into the neighborhood later. Enjoy performances in Yiddish and Chinese, hands-on art projects and, of course, kosher egg rolls and egg creams.
    When: Sunday, June 11. 12pm-4pm.
Where: Eldridge Street Synagogue, 12 Eldridge Street between Canal and Division Streets
