Heat Wave Update

Thursday August 3, 2006
As New York residents cling to meteorologist promises that the heat wave will break by tomorrow, Con Edison is struggling to keep five boroughs of air conditioners running. Power outages have already occurred on the East Side of Manhattan (from 14th to 40th Streets between Fifth Avenue and the East River) and in parts of Brooklyn and Queens.

Mayor Bloomberg is asking New Yorkers to continue to conserve energy to prevent further power outages. New York residents are advised to keep air conditioners set at 78 degrees and avoid using major appliances before 11PM. Read more about conserving energy to avoid blackouts.

If it's any consolation, New York City swimming pools are once again staying open until 8PM tonight to help New Yorkers beat the heat. Get more tips for staying cool and avoiding heat exhaustion.
