Weekend Picks -- Film, Fools, and Coney Island
Friday March 30, 2007
- Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez on Grindhouse -- On Friday evening, hear Tarantino and Rodriguez discuss the appeal of the exploitation film, the challenge of shocking today's movie fans, and their new collaboration Grindhouse, which opens next weekend. For more juicy details about the infamous grindhouse culture in New York, which dominated Times Square before Disney and M&Ms took over, see the latest issue of Time Out New York.
- New York Underground Film Festival -- Check out the coolest new underground films this weekend at The New York Underground Film Festival at the Anthology Film Archives. You'll find everything from documentaries to slasher flicks to experimental erotica. Tickets are $8.50 and available online or at the box office on the day of the show.
- Astroland Opening Weekend -- Sunday is opening day of what will likely be the very last summer season at Astroland Amusement Park in Coney Island. The first 100 visitors when the park opens at 11:30AM get to ride the famous Cyclone roller coaster for free. Opening weekend entertainment will include the Hungry March Band and Kinko the Clown (does he make copies in big shoes?). If you haven't been or haven't been in a while, make sure you check out this historic and iconic park while you still have a chance before they tear it down and replace it with luxury housing or a mall.
- April Fool's Day Fun -- Celebrate April Fool's with a day of family storytelling at the Provincetown Playhouse. Starting at 3PM on Sunday, storytellers will entertain kids and parents with tales of tricksters and fools. Admission is free for kids and $5 for adults. For more information, call 212-998-5867.
