Review of Day Zero at Tribeca Film Festival

Wednesday May 2, 2007
What if the draft were reinstated and your number came up? Day Zero follows three friends in New York City as they prepare to report for duty in Iraq. Aaron (Elijah Wood) is a neurotic novelist who panics at the thought of hand-to-hand combat. George (Chris Klein) is a successful corporate attorney desperately searching for a loophole. Tough-guy cabdriver Dixon (Jon Bernthal) is fired up to fight until he finds himself falling in love.

This film presents a frightening scenario that seems all too possible right now, but it doesn't try to offer any easy answers. Conflicting attitudes toward the war are examined through different characters in the film. It's great to see a film about a controversial subject that features real characters and a real story instead of just preaching.

Go with friends for a guaranteed conversation starter. You can also go to the film's web site and respond to a poll on what you would do if the draft were reinstated. So far, 30.8% of respondents say they would flee the country and 18.8% say they would serve with honor. Discuss amongst yourselves.

The film also offers great views of New York City and a chance to play "name that street corner" during lots of outdoor scenes. Director Bryan Gunnar Cole is an NYU Film School grad and writer/executive producer Rob Malkani is based in New York City.

You can catch Day Zero at the Tribeca Film Festival on Friday May 4th at 3PM at AMC Kips Bay or on Saturday, May 5th at 9PM at the AMC Village VII (see Tribeca Film Guide for directions and details). Advance tickets for both shows are sold out, but you can still buy tickets at the door.
