Weekend Picks

Friday August 10, 2007
  • Central Park SummerStage -- Check out free concerts in Central Park this weekend. On Friday, see contemporary ballet. On Saturday, celebrate New Orleans with Soul to Soul III, Galactic, and other performers. On Sunday, enjoy a night of African music with Zap Mama and Angelique Kidjo.

  • Melville Day -- Celebrate the life and work of Herman Melville at this all-day event on Saturday. The party begins at 12PM in Hudson River Park with dramatic Melville readings and a New York Water Taxi ride to South Street Seaport. At 1PM, join a historic walking tour of Melville's 19th-century New York. The afternoon features lectures, demonstrations, and more readings. End the day with a reception aboard the Peking in New York Harbor.

  • International Yo-Yo Open -- See the world's yo-yo masters show off their moves at this expo on Saturday from 11AM to 5PM at South Street Seaport.

  • Baseball and Jazz at the Museum of the City of New York -- On Saturday, take a family tour of the museum's exhibit on the glory days of New York baseball and design your own baseball card. On Sunday, check out a screening of rare films from the Jazz Age featuring Miles Davis and Billie Holiday.

  • Summergarden Jazz at MOMA -- Did you know that the Musuem of Modern Art hosts free jazz concerts in the Sculpture Garden every summer Sunday? After checking out the jazz films at the Museum of the City of New York, head to MOMA for an evening of jazz music in the garden with Etienne Charles' Culture Shock Project. Admission is free, but seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis so arrive early. Gates open at 7 PM and the concert begins at 8 PM.

  • Take A Cool Dip -- Take a dive into one of New York City's public or hotel swimming pools and cool off this weekend. Looking for something a little different? Splash around in the East River with the Floating Pool Lady in her seven-lane swimming pool moored off of the beach in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

  • Weekend Street Fairs and Festivals -- Hit the streets this weekend for shopping and snacking at great street fairs including the Dominican Festival on Amsterdam Avenue between 190th and 193rd Streets.
