Weekend Picks

Friday November 16, 2007
  • Grand Opening of Muji Soho -- New York shoppers finally have a Muji to call our own. A Soho location of Muji, the Japanese design emporium, opens on Friday, November 16th at 12PM at 455 Broadway (between Grand and Howard Streets). Be prepared to fight the crowds to be among the first to snag some of Muji's beautiful, minimalist, and affordable designs for the home. The first 500 shoppers will get a free Muji tote bag.

  • Big Apple Comic Book, Art, Toy, and Sci-Fi Expo -- The Big Apple Con at Penn Plaza Pavilion is the place to be this weekend for comics and toy collectors and pop culture aficionados. This year's special celebrity guests include the beautiful women of Heroes, Hayden Panetierre and Kristen Bell. Also appearing are Val Kilmer, Katey "Peg Bundy" Sagal, William Mapother and Mira Furlan from Lost, and many others. Admission is $18 in advance and $20 at the door. The event runs from 1PM-8PM on Friday and 10AM-7PM on Saturday and Sunday.

  • UNICEF Snowflake Lighting with Russell Simmons -- Russell Simmons will host the annual UNICEF Snowflake Lighting ceremony on Saturday at 6:30 PM in front of Tiffany & Co. Enjoy hot chocolate, holiday music, a light show featuring some serious Tiffany bling, and the unveiling of the Tiffany & Co. holiday window displays. The evening will begin with a recital by the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, then Russell Simmons will take the stage and flip the switch to illuminate the UNICEF Snowflake, which is adorned with 16,000 Baccarat crystal prisms and weighs in at more than 3,300 pounds. At 23 feet in diameter and over 28 feet in height, the UNICEF Snowflake is the largest outdoor chandelier of its kind. See photos of last year's UNICEF Snowflake Lighting ceremony with Clay Aiken.

  • What Would Jesus Buy? Opens in New York -- This film from director Rob Van Alkemade and producer Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) follows Bill Talen (aka Rev. Billy) from his humble beginnings as a preacher on New York City subways as he builds a national movement to save Christmas from the Shopocalypse—the end of humankind from consumerism, over-consumption and the fires of eternal debt. The film will make its U.S. theatrical premiere on November 16 at Cinema Village (22 E. 12th St). Between the 7:05PM and 9PM screenings, the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir will take to the streets for a special performance. It may be just what the doctor ordered for those of us who are already feeling the symptoms of holiday shopping overwhelm. Get tickets to see What Would Jesus Buy?

  • Help Feed Hungry New Yorkers -- Volunteers are needed this weekend for two great events that will help feed hungry and ill New Yorkers this holiday season. Hungerthon 2007, the annual pledge drive on WCBS-AM to raise money to fight poverty, needs volunteers to help man the phones. Learn more about supporting Hungerthon 2007. On Sunday, join thousands of runners, volunteers and supporters at the 14th Annual Race to Deliver, an annual run/walk in Central Park to raise funds for God's Love We Deliver, an organization that provides meals for those afflicted with AIDS, cancer, and other serious illnesses. Find out how to support God's Love We Deliver and/or the Race to Deliver.
