Here are our top New York City event picks for the weekend of January 18-20, 2008:
- Under the Radar Theater Festival -- See new theater from around the U.S. and the world at theaters around Manhattan through January 20. See the full schedule of Under the Radar productions.
- NYC Strong Ale Festival -- Head to Hop Devil Grill on St. Mark’s Place this weekend for the annual Daze of the Devil Strong Ale Festival (Saturday, January 19th from noon till 6:00 PM and on Sunday, January 20th, from noon until the beer runs out). There will be an amazing array of rare and, most importantly, STRONG beers on tap. Some beers to sample: Boulder Beer Killer Penguin, Brooklyn Monster Ale (Vintage), Dragonmead Final Absolution , HeBrew Bittersweet Lenny’s R.I.P.A., Keegan Super Kitty, and Stone Double Bastard. There is no entry fee and sampling will be four ounce pours on a pay as you go basis.
- 17th Annual New York Jewish Film Festival -- Catch the final weekend of the New York Jewish Film Festival, sponsored by The Jewish Museum and the Film Society of Lincoln Center. This weekend's screenings include Jerusalem is Proud to Present, a documentary about Jerusalem's 2006 World Pride festival, and the 1925 silent film His People. Tickets are $11, $7 for members, students, and seniors.
- Tea and 19th Century Fortune Telling -- If you'd rather have a strong cup of tea than a strong mug of beer, spend Saturday at the Merchant's House Museum. Enjoy an afternoon tea with finger sandwiches and scones, followed by a lecture by astrologer Roberta Alessandra on the art of fortune-telling. Personal readings will also be available for $10.
- I Have a Scream! -- Have Monday off for Martin Luther King's birthday? Celebrate at this free pre-MLK Day dance party blowout at Beauty Bar (231 East 14th Street) on Sunday night. Enjoy free Bass Ale from 10PM-11PM and DJs Captain Heartlock and Xerox spinning all night.
