Long-Awaited Second Avenue Subway Delayed Again
NY1 reported today that the MTA is over budget and behind schedule on the long-awaited Second Avenue subway project. After decades of anticipation, the MTA broke ground on the project last year and planned to complete the first leg, which will run from 96th Street to 63rd Street, by 2013.
That completion date has now been pushed back to 2015 due to budget overruns caused by rising construction costs.
The Second Avenue Subway promises to make life easier for many East Side residents. But will it ever be finished? Many New Yorkers still think of it as an urban legend that will never come true.
About the Second Avenue Subway Project
The Second Avenue Subway will be New York City’s first major expansion of the subway system in more than 50 years. When completed, the new T train will run for 8.5 miles under Second Avenue from 125th Street in Harlem to Hanover Square in Lower Manhattan. In addition, a connection to existing lines will allow for direct service from East Harlem and the Upper East Side to West Midtown via the Broadway express tracks.
Sixteen new subway stations will be built, serving communities in Harlem, the Upper East Side, East Midtown, Gramercy Park, East Village, the Lower East Side, Chinatown and Lower Manhattan.
Phase 2 is expected to extend service to west midtown and to Brooklyn via an extension of the Q line. In Phase 3, service will be extended to Houston Street and 2nd Avenue and Phase 4 will complete the project. No dates have yet been set for completion of future phases. What's your prediction for when the Second Avenue Subway will actually be finished?

Comments
I predict that Phase 4 will be completed in 6565.
That sounds about right. And for your awesome guess you win a free ride on the Second Avenue subway! Prize is only redeemable upon completion of Phase 4 so eat healthy and take your vitamins if you want to collect it.
I’ll be retired or dead by the time the subway is finished

My father talked about the Second Avenue Subway in the 1940s.It was supposed to go all the way to the north Bronx. That this long awaited dream has not become a reality testifies to the incompetence and stupidity of teh so-called leadership of the government of the City of New York. Other cities have been able to build beautiful subways, ie. Los Angles, San Francisco, Paris, etc. but not NYC where the politicians are just plain dumb, corrupt, and yes, incompetent.
