Happy 125th Birthday, Brooklyn Bridge

Today kicks off a five-day birthday celebration in honor of the bridge that has inspired millions of photographs and has been offered for sale too many times to count. Happy birthday, Brooklyn Bridge. You look fabulous for your age.

Mayor Bloomberg and New York City are throwing a serious birthday party which will feature a special Bridge lighting, concerts, a film series, lectures, children’s readings, dance performances and a bike tour. I shall expect no less for my 125th birthday.

The fun will begin with a big party tonight at the Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park in Brooklyn with live music by the Brooklyn Philharmonic, fireworks, and the illumination of a light installation that will span the Brooklyn Bridge and light up the New York City skyline each evening from 9:00 pm to 11:00 pm through Memorial Day.

There will also be film screenings and readings in both Brooklyn and Manhattan, guided tours of the Brooklyn Bridge, and lots of other special events.
