Simchat Torah in New York
Tuesday October 21, 2008
If you happen to be taking a stroll this evening and come across a group intoxicated people dancing in the street, don’t be alarmed – they’re probably celebrating Simchat Torah, one of the most joyous Jewish holidays of the year.
The holiday marks the conclusion of the annual cycle of public Torah readings and is celebrated by a series of processions around the synagogue and high-spirited singing and dancing with the Torahs. Read more about the history and significance of Simchat Torah.
For a family-friendly Simchat Torah celebration in New York, we suggest checking out B’nai Jeshrun (2109 Broadway @ 88th Street) starting at 6:45. More information.
If the partying takes you into the wee hours of the night, you can be sure the crowds will be out late at Congregation Kehilath Jacob - The Carlebch Shul (305 West 79th Street between West End Avenue and Riverside Drive). Get the details.
