What's the Best New York City Gym?
Thursday December 18, 2008
Do you love your gym? I know fitness isn't #1 on most priority lists during this holiday season of sugary treats and boozy parties. But that January gym rush is right around the corner. Many New Yorkers will be making New Year's resolutions to start a fitness routine, re-commit to regular workouts, or drop those extra open bar and dessert buffet pounds. And choosing the right gym can make a big difference in staying motivated.
That's why I'm working on a round-up of the best New York City gyms at every price point. And I want your opinion. If you love your gym, why is it so great? If you've got complaints, what are they? Are you getting what you pay for or getting ripped off?
Post your opinion in the comments or use our new Readers Respond tool.
- What gym do you belong to? Is there a particular location or locations that you frequent?
- When did you join?
- What do you like about your gym?
- What do you dislike about your gym?
- Approximately how much do you pay per month (a range is fine)? Did you get a special deal?
- Did you pay an initiation fee? About how much?
- How does your current gym compare to others that you know about?
- Would you recommend your gym to a friend?

I canceled my NYSC gym membership back in November. I later confirmed that cancellation. Today I returned from a trip, opened my credit card statement, and found that I have been getting charged every month since November for the membership.
Right away I went to NYSC, expecting to have the charges reversed. Instead, the manager said that I could not possibly have canceled my membership. He said that I am still a member and will continue to be charged.
I want to warn everyone out there about what I think is a scam: when I canceled my membership, I asked the staff member if I should provide any documentation to do so. He said no. I confirmed the cancellation a few days later with a different staff member. Today the manager said that my contract says that cancellation requires written documentation. The manager said that staff can say anything they want to people (like, “yes, your membership is canceled), but it does not have to be the truth. So my advice to you guys is, first of all, don’t join this club. Second, don’t believe anything they tell you. They will say anything to get your $. Read the contract very carefully.
This is not the first time I’ve heard of this happening at NYSC.
Hey Annette — Thanks for posting a warning! Good to know what to watch out for.
I was also a victim of a scam by NYSC. I lost my key tab and was told I could get a replacement easily. When I went, they couldn’t find a record of my membership on file. I tried several more times in person and called the head office and noone could find a record of my membership. They told me to assume that my membership had been cancelled. I then checked my credit card statements and they had been charging me every month. The reason they couldn’t find my details was because they had misspelled my name on the system!! When I called they refused to accept responsibility. Do not join this club.
I’ve also had problems with NYSC billing. And as others have noted, their billing office is NOT pleasant to deal with. If my neighborhood (Forest Hills) had another convenient gym I would join.
