Weekend Picks -- January is Here

Friday January 2, 2009
Are you ready for January, New York? It's the first weekend of 2009 and it looks like everybody's still recovering from New Year's Eve. At least, the pickings seem to be slim for organized events in New York City this weekend. But it is New York, after all, so there is still plenty of fun to be had. And check out our event listings for January 2009 to see what's coming up -- including Three Kings Day, New York Restaurant Week, the No Pants! Subway Ride, and much more.
  • Weekend at MOMA -- Spend the first weekend of 2009 admiring the works of modern masters at the Museum of Modern Art. There are only days left to catch Van Gogh and the Colors of the Night (closing January 5, 2009) and Joan Miro: Painting and Anti-Painting 1927-1937 (closing January 12, 1009).

  • Central Park Moonlight Ride -- Join Time's Up for a brisk moonlight bike ride through Central Park on Friday night. It's a great way to kick off your New Year's resolution to shape up or reduce your carbon footprint.

  • Coney Island Circus Sideshow -- The freaks will be out at Highline Ballroom on Friday night. And I'm not talking about the regular, run-of-the-mill NYC freaks -- these are professionals. See Coney Island's legendary Donny Vomit (chainsaw juggler and glass walker), Serpentina (contortionist and snake charmer), Heather Holliday (sword swallower and fire eater), and Curtis Eller (New York's angriest yodeling banjo player). Tickets are $10 and doors open at 6PM for the 8PM show (first come, first seated).

  • Recycle Your Electronic Waste -- If Santa brought you new gadgets this year, it's the perfect time to recycle all of your old electronics. Drop off your unwanted cell phones, computers, scanners, radios, VCR/DVD players, and more at 17th Street and Broadway on Sunday between 10AM and 4PM.
