Cheap Thrills in New York

Wednesday February 4, 2009
piggy bank The weather is cold and the economic forecasts are bleak. That doesn't mean you have to stay inside sulking and clipping coupons. New York may be one of the most expensive and stressful cities in the world, but you can still find some cheap fun if you know where to look. Here are a few ideas for inexpensive and free fun in New York City in February:
  • Have a Laugh. A good laugh shouldn't require a cover charge and a two-drink minimum. This Thursday night, check out Convergence at Ochi's Lounge at Comix. The show is free as long as you spring for a beer ($5-$7) or something to eat ($10 range). Check out Ochi's calendar for more cheap laughs every night this month. At Comix upstairs, you can also take advantage of a package deal that gets you tickets to two shows for the price of one.

  • See an Off-Broadway Show. Get cheap tickets for more than 30 of the hottest Off-Broadway shows with a special two-for-one ticket deal. See celebrated actors like Kathleen Turner, Cynthia Nixon, Nathan Lane, and Maggie Gyllenhaal in some of the most buzzed-about Off-Broadway productions.

  • Hit the Slopes. Who needs Aspen when you can enjoy a free day of skiing and snowboarding in East River Park? At Winter Jam this weekend, you can show off your moves on a 70-foot snow flume, hear some live music, and snag free samples.
And don't forget that New York Restaurant Week has been extended until February 27th. So you can afford to grab a nice dinner before or after that Off-Broadway play, comedy show, or frolic in the park.
