Mom's Night Out

By , About.com GuideMay 6, 2009

mother's day flowers This Thursday, moms across the country will take the night off for National Mom's Nite Out, an early Mother's Day celebration and an opportunity for hard-working mothers to get out and play with other grown-ups.

Author and blogger Beth Feldman worked with CityDusk to organize the New York celebration of National Mom's Nite Out -- Open Mom Night at Comic Strip Live. We talked to Beth about the event (tickets are $35 each) and what's so funny about being a mom in New York City.

What is National Mom’s Nite Out?
Beth: It's the first nationally organized celebration of motherhood and is intended to bring together today’s moms, both physically and virtually. The National Mom’s Nite Out will unite over 150 social media groups, companies, local playgroups, mommy bloggers and mother social networks in giving moms a well-deserved night off.

What can moms expect at Open Mom Night?
Beth: We hope that Open Mom Night will be the first of many events showcasing some of the most talented (and brave) moms in the tri-state area. We'll be featuring humor columnists, authors, actresses and mom bloggers who have managed to perfect the art of storytelling by sharing their frustrations, confessions and everyday foibles for all the world to read.

And this time, rather than just seeing their essays in print or online, we're bringing them to life. We hope to provide an evening filled with laughter and camaraderie for today's busy moms.

What's so funny about being a mom in New York City?
Beth: I think New York City moms always put a sarcastic spin on the joys and frustrations of juggling their jobs, their home life and everything in between.

Just watching a NYC mom change a diaper with one hand while responding to a message on her BlackBerry with the other is enough to crack anyone up. In fact, I used to be able to breast feed and participate in conference calls at the same time.

There's no telling what a NYC mom will do to keep all the plates spinning - it's when they crash to the ground that things get messy and very funny too.

Treat your favorite busy mama to a night of laughs at Comic Strip Live or design the perfect Mother's Day outing for this Sunday (we've got picks for NYC concerts, dinner deals, spa offerings, and more).
