Weekend Picks — Uke Fest, Princely Polo, Banging Downtown, Fireworks, and More

By , About.com GuideMay 29, 2009

Happy 100th Birthday, Queensboro Bridge. You may not be New York City's most glamorous and iconic bridge, but you get the job done. After 100 years of connecting Manhattan and Queens, you deserve a centennial celebration and a Grucci fireworks display (check back on Monday for photos).

And if fireworks aren't enough excitement for you, there are plenty of other fun things to do in New York City this weekend.
  • New York Uke Fest 2009 -- This year's festival pays tribute to Hawaii's 50th anniversary of statehood. Hear the uke masters play, learn how to pluck a tune, and enjoy some delicious coconut pudding.

  • Manhattan Polo Classic -- See Britain's Prince Harry face off against Argentine polo star Nacho Figueras at the Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic on Governors Island on Saturday. Bleacher seats are free

  • The Wickedest Ward Walking Tour -- The South Street Seaport was once known as Manhattan's wickedest ward. Take a walking tour and learn about the neighborhood's colorful past, then visit the New York City Police Museum for more New York crime lore. Admission is $12 ($7 for museum members) and includes the walking tour and museum admission.

  • Japan Day in Central Park -- Visit Central Park on Sunday for a celebration of traditional and contemporary Japanese culture. Sample Japanese delicacies and enjoy live performances of Japanese music, dance, and martial arts.

  • Time's Up! Doggie Pedal Parade -- Take a bike ride with your best pal. "Pup your ride" with a basket or trailer for Fido and join other New York dog lovers for a bike parade and a post-ride celebration in Tompkins Square Park with snacks and playtime for dogs and humans.

  • Bang on a Can Marathon -- The summer-long River to River Festival kicks off on Sunday with the 21st Anniversary Bang on a Can Marathon -- a 12-hour concert featuring cutting-edge artists from around the world at the World Financial Center.

  • Queensboro Bridge Centennial Celebration and Fireworks -- Celebrate the centennial of the Queensboro Bridge with a spectacular fireworks display from the tip of Roosevelt Island (great views from the east side of Manhattan) and other events.
