Weekend Picks -- Anniversary Celebrations, Street Fairs, Dance Parties, and More
Friday June 5, 2009
This weekend, enjoy anniversary celebrations for the Queensboro Bridge (100 years), the old St. Patrick's Cathedral (200 years), and the discovery of the Hudson River (400 years). Elsewhere in the city this weekend, you can dance with Moby, lounge in a beer tent in Soho, and party like F.Scott Fitzgerald.
- One Step Beyond with Moby -- Moby and Holy Ghost! will perform at the American Museum of Natural History's monthly dance party under the stars at the Rose Center for Earth and Space. It's your last chance to get your groove on at the planetarium this season.
- The Found Footage Festival Presents Bad Movie Night -- Did you somehow miss the awesomely bad Computer Beach Party when it hit the mall multiplex in the '80s? Now you have a second chance to see this horrible, horrible film and enjoy commentary, trivia games, and other surprises.
- Hudson River Day -- Mark the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's discovery of the Hudson Valley. On Friday evening, ships will assemble for a blessing and photo op. On Saturday, you can see a majestic boat parade that will depart from the Statue of Liberty at 9am.
- Housing Works Open Air Street Fair -- On Saturday, you can shop for $1 books from the Housing Works Bookstore Cafe and browse through mountains of clothing, jewelry, and artwork from the Housing Works Thrift Shops. Or just chill out at the outdoor cafe or in the Sixpoint beer tent. All proceeds benefit Housing Works and their work to help New Yorkers battling HIV/AIDS and homelessness. Also, see our NYC Street Fair listings for the details on other street fairs this weekend.
- Jazz Age Lawn Party -- Make like Jay Gatsby at this '20s-themed event on Governors Island. Dress up flapper-style and enjoy old-fashioned cocktails and dancing to the jazz sounds of Michael Aranella and his Dreamland Orchestra.
- Queensboro Bridge Centennial Celebrations -- The festivities in honor of 100 years of the Queensboro Bridge continue. This weekend's events include walking tours, boat tours, and more.
- 200th Anniversary of St. Patrick's Old Cathedral -- On Sunday, celebrate the 200th anniversary of New York City's oldest cathedral with a parade and festival on Mulberry Street.
