This year marks the 70th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz. To celebrate, Netflix is hosting a FREE screening and concert in Central Park.

Hear Jennifer Hudson, Julianne Hough, and the Roots' Amir ?uestlove  Thompson perform songs from the film. Then sit back to watch the young Judy Garland (and her little dog too) ride a flying house to the land of Oz .

The event begins at 7:30 PM on Rumsey Playfield. Enter Central Park at Fifth Avenue and 69th Street. Arrive early for a good spot. Some bleacher seating is available, but most of the seating is on the grass, so bring your blanket. Feel free to bring a picnic too -- but be aware that coolers and glass are prohibited. Get more info.

You  may just find that this favorite movie from your childhood (it was an annual tradition in our house and I dressed up as the green-faced witch for three Halloweens in a row) has new relevance to you as a mostly grown-up New Yorker.

After all, The Wizard of Oz has a jealous witch, an incompetent wizard with no real power, and a long and difficult journey (complete with lions, tigers, bears, flying monkeys, and an opium binge) to the Emerald City.
