New York City Taxi Fare Increase

Have you noticed that your New York City taxi rides have gotten more expensive? As of November 1st, your NYC cab fare went up $.50, but don't blame your cab driver.
New York State added a 50-cent surcharge to all NYC taxi rides. That means you pay $3.00 just to get into the cab (previously, the initial fare was $2.50). You'll still pay $.40 per 1/5 mile and minute. Other surcharges ($.50 between 8pm and 6am and $1.00 during weekday evening rush hour between 4pm and 8pm) also still apply.

First, thanks for making the distinction between the fare and the collection of a state-imposed tax. It is true, the TLC has not raised the taxi fare, which continues to remain at $2.50. Just to clarify, however, it is the taxicab owner that must “collect and pass on” the surcharge to the NYS Derpartment of Taxation & Finance. The NYC TLC does not collect or forward any of this money.
