Best and Worst NYC Public Bathrooms

By , About.com Guide   July 20, 2010

New York City is home to two of the finalists in the 2010 America's Best Restroom Awards. Have you ever been prouder to call yourself a New Yorker?

It is an honor just to be nominated, but you can help a New York bathroom take the title this year by casting your vote for the fancy, flowery Bryant Park public restroom or the funky (that's the good funky in this case) restrooms at The Muse Hotel in Times Square.

The Bryant Park public restroom is indeed impressive -- featuring  Beaux Arts architecture, an attendant, fresh flowers, and cleanliness not often found in a public park bathroom. I have not had the pleasure of experiencing the facilities at The Muse, but the contest photos show themed washrooms (Envy, Macho, Vain, and others) with customized fixtures and mosaic tiles.

Of course, most of New York's public restrooms are not award-worthy. While I'm thankful for the few public restrooms that still exist in New York City, I have often longed for a haz mat suit when visiting the bathroom at a local Starbucks or McDonalds. The Port Authority Bus Terminal restroom is also one that haunts my nightmares.

Do you have a nomination for worst bathroom in New York City?

Starbucks has the worst bathrooms in NYC, hands down. For such an elitist establishment, this is surprising to say the least. The best bathrooms are those at NBC studios in Rockefeller Plaza and Macy’s.

Starbucks bathrooms can be surprisingly nasty. The one near Madison Park on 23rd Street stands out in my memory as being particularly nauseating.
