New York Responds to Bin Laden's Death

By , About.com GuideMay 2, 2011

Following last night's announcement of Osama Bin Laden's death, many New Yorkers have been drawn to visit the World Trade Center site to mark the occasion and acknowledge those who were lost on September 11, 2001.

Mayor Bloomberg's official statement: ""The killing of Osama bin Laden does not lessen the suffering that New Yorkers and Americans experienced at his hands, but it is a critically important victory for our nation - and a tribute to the millions of men and women in our armed forces and elsewhere who have fought so hard for our nation.

New Yorkers have waited nearly ten years for this news. It is my hope that it will bring some closure and comfort to all those who lost loved ones on September 11, 2001."

Responding to the announcement and concerns about retaliation, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority  increased security and the city transit system is on high alert.  Transit riders may experience some delays as a result.

Also, due to heavy NYPD and news media presence near the World Trade Center site, Vesey Street has been closed to traffic between Broadway and Church Street.
