martinlutherkingphoto.jpgToday, the nation commemorates the legacy of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr.

All NYC public buildings, government offices, courts, and post offices are closed in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Public schools are also closed for the holiday, along with banks and most financial institutions.

One of the best ways to mark the occasion is to participate in a community service project as part of the nationwide movement for "a day on, not a day off" on Dr. King's holiday. Volunteering can help you make a difference in the quality of life for your neighbors in New York City. It's also incredibly rewarding on a personal level and can even provide you with valuable advantages in finding a new job or advancing in your career.

Can't find a volunteer opportunity that fits into your schedule today? You can also honor the teachings of Dr. King at events around New York City.
