- Rooftop Films -- Check out an evening of award-winning short films on a rooftop on the Lower East Side this Friday night. It's all part of Rooftop Films' 11th annual Summer Series, an event featuring film programs at different rooftop locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn all summer long. After tonight's film program, head down the block to the after-party complete with open bar. Tickets are $8.
- Big Apple Barbecue Block Party -- The 5th Annual Big Apple Barbecue Block party brings America's finest barbecue to Manhattan for two delicious days in Madison Square Park. The nation's best pitmasters will smoke bbq specialties including ribs, pulled pork, and brisket for your dining pleasure. Live music on the outdoor stage will include jazz, blues and bluegrass. You can even check out bbq seminars and learn how to make your own prizewinning pork. Admission is free and the BBQ is just $8 per plate. Just be prepared to wait in line for your bbq -- the mouthwatering aromas always draw a crowd.
- Garden Day at the Cloisters -- Spend the day in the Cloisters' beautiful medieval gardens and enjoy tours, a family workshop (in English and Spanish), and special gallery talks. - Roaring '20s Hot Jazz Picnic on Governors Island -- Governors Island, the former Coast Guard base in New York Harbor with impressive views of Manhattan, is open to the public every weekend this summer. Just a short ferry ride from Lower Manhattan, Governors Island is a National Historic Landmark District. You can visit 18th and 19th century forts and other historic architecture. This Saturday, Governors Island will host a free Gatsby-inspired picnic with live music from Michael Arenella and his Dreamland Orchestra.
- Puerto Rican Day Parade -- Join Ricky Martin and thousands of others to celebrate Puerto Rican culture at the annual extravaganza that is the the New York Puerto Rican Day Parade. Rumor has it that presidential hopefuls Clinton, Giuliani, and McCain will stop by the fiesta.
- Loving Day -- Celebrate the 40th anniversary of Loving v. Virginia, the Supreme Court case that legalized interracial marriage, with a day of free beer, ice cream, BBQ, and music from DJ Tyler Askew. It's all happening at Solar 1 on the East River waterfront at 23rd Street.
