New York Job Interview Tips

Acing the Job Interview in New York City

From Lauren M. Krauze, for About.com

Try to think of the New York job interview as an opportunity to meet your potential new employers and hear what they have to say about themselves and their company. Remember to bring many copies of your resume just in case they decide to parade you in front of the Human Resources rep, the Hiring Manager, the VP, and five of his closest chums.

Getting There
In New York, you never know when there can be a transit strike, a freak snowstorm, or a parade down 5th Avenue. Figure out a way to your interview that’s not only fast, but efficient and not likely to be disrupted. If you’re new to the city, plot out your subway route and leave yourself plenty of time to get lost, transfer to the wrong train, or walk half a mile in the wrong direction. For complete directions to and from any NYC location via the subway, check out HopStop.

You'll also want to leave a little extra time to get past building security. In many large Manhattan office buildings post-9/11, you'll have to stop at the security desk before you're allowed into your meeting. That could mean a quick sign-in and flash of your ID. It could also mean waiting for security to call upstairs and verify your appointment, which can take some time. Plan to arrive at least five minutes early to allow for any security-related delays.

Style
While you don’t have to drop thousands at Bergdorf’s on a new wardrobe, it is important that you look your best. That means professional attire. Even if you're interviewing in a business casual environment, always err on the side of being overdressed. Dress for the position you want, not the position you're interviewing for.

The rule of thumb for all boys and girls going on interviews: wear a suit in a neutral color (black, navy, blue, gray). Ladies, no hoochie camis, flip flops, or skirts shorter than just-a-smidge-above-the-knee length. Guys, please remove ALL visible piercings and be freshly groomed with a tie (a real one please), dress shoes, and dress socks.

And make sure your suit 1) matches, and 2) fits. Nothing is more embarrassing than being that awkward kid fresh out of college with mismatched flood pants or an oversized suit jacket.

Confidence
While the interviewers may try to trip you up with trick questions, keep your cool and remember that you’re also interviewing them. After all, if you’re hired, you will be required to work there and cooperate with the other employees for 40+ hours per week.

Listen to your gut; if you get a bad vibe walking through the office or if the person interviewing you keeps winking as you answer the questions, the company is probably not a good fit. Also keep in mind that it’s New York -- there are hundreds of top companies and organizations and endless opportunities for finding a great position.
