Equinox Fitness Review

Equinox gyms are beautiful, well-maintained, and conveniently located. They've got the latest equipment and lots of great classes so you'll never get bored. Of course, you'll pay higher monthly membership fees for these privileges and have to fight the crowds during peak workout times.

I made the switch to Equinox from a much cheaper neighborhood gym and have found that the benefits are worth the higher fees. My previous gym was a great deal but I dreaded working out there because the machines were beat up, the locker room was grungy, and the lines for the treadmills were endless. I looked for any excuse to avoid working out at my old gym.

At Equinox, all of the equipment is shiny and new and the locker rooms are always clean and well stocked with towels and free hair and body products. I look forward to my Equinox workouts. As a result, I'm in much better shape even if my wallet is a bit lighter.

If you work out during weekday evenings and weekend mornings, you'll probably encounter some crowds (especially during January and April-May, when all gyms tend to get lots of new and newly committed members). I've rarely had to wait to get on a cardio machine, though popular group fitness classes do sometimes fill up and the lines for the showers can get long.

Equinox Pros

  • Clean
  • Spacious
  • Well-maintained equipment
  • Several convenient locations in Manhattan (as well as in Brooklyn, Long Island, and Westchester and in several other major cities across the country)
  • Variety of group fitness classes including yoga, pilates, spin, sculpting, and more
  • Qualified trainers
  • Friendly staff
  • Swimming pools, Pilates studios, juice bars, and on-site childcare and spa facilities at certain locations

Equinox Cons

  • More expensive than many other NYC gyms
  • Can get overcrowded

Equinox Membership Fees

Like most New York City gyms, Equinox Fitness does not advertise a standard initiation and monthly membership fee. They will usually provide details on current pricing only if you make an in-person appointment with a membership associate. That's partly because they want to get you into the gym to make it easier to close the deal and partly because Equinox frequently offers special promotions and deals so prices can vary significantly.

Based on information from current and recent Equinox members, monthly fees range from $120-$165 and initiation fees range from $0 (for a special promotion) to $600.
