Don't Assume You Can't Afford A Lawyer
You may think you can't afford to hire an attorney (we all know they charge by the hour). However, there are a number of agencies in New York City that will provide legal help at no cost to people of limited income. The following are some agencies in Manhattan that provide free or low-cost legal assistance:

LawHelp.org: LawHelp.org is a resource for low and moderate-income New Yorkers who need legal help and information. The site features a directory of lawyers. You can search by zip code and by the type of legal problem you are facing. For each law firm or attorney, LawHelp.org provides information on credentials and specializations -- and also qualifications needed to receive free or low-cost assistance (i.e. income level or status). The site also features helpful information about the law and how to navigate the court systems in New York.

The Legal Aid Society: The Legal Aid Society provides free legal services for people who can't afford an attorney. The Legal Aid Society has a Civil Practice (which includes employment, family, immigration and housing law) and a Criminal Defense Practice. Offices are located in all five boroughs of New York City.

MFY Legal Services, Inc.: MFY offers free civil legal services to individuals, families and community groups.
