New York Sports Club ReviewFor your money, it's hard to beat the convenience of New York Sports Club (NYSC). With 55 locations in the five boroughs, you're likely to find a NYSC gym near any home or office in New York City.
New York Sports Club initiation and monthly membership fees are reasonable and the clubs have all of the equipment you need to get a great workout, along with group fitness classes and a personal training staff. The facilities are also generally clean and well-maintained.
The New York Sports Club experience does tend to vary quite a bit by location. Some locations are overly crowded, some don't have enough elliptical machines, and some have lame group fitness classes. If you're thinking of joining, be sure to first visit the club(s) you'll frequent during the times you'll most often work out.
Overall, the group fitness classes didn't get high marks from the New York Sports Club members that I surveyed. One member said that yoga classes in particular were very disappointing. Another member says there are often lines for the cardio equipment at her Upper East Side location, but that "machine cops" do try to keep the lines moving. Note: Several readers have shared their negative experiences with New York Sports Club billing representatives. Two readers reported that they were billed after cancelling their memberships. If you decide to join, be sure to read the fine print and get your cancellation confirmation in writing!
New York Sports Club Pros
- Reasonable monthly membership fees
- Very convenient locations
- Clean and well-maintained facilities
New York Sports Club Cons
- Disappointing group fitness classes
- Reported billing errors and bad customer service
- Lines for cardio equipment
- Small locker rooms in some locations
New York Sports Club Membership FeesLike most New York City gyms, New York Sports Club does not advertise a standard initiation and monthly membership fee. They will usually provide details on current pricing only if you make an in-person appointment with a membership associate. That's partly because they want to get you into the gym to make it easier to close the deal and partly because New York Sports Club frequently offers special promotions and deals so prices can vary significantly.
Based on information from current and recent New York Sports Club members, monthly fees range from $75-$85 and initiation fees range from $0 to $200.
