Summer is the perfect time to continue your education, advance your career, or simply learn something new. This year, escape the city heat and enroll in a summer session or program of study at one of Manhattan’s educational institutions or learning centers.
- Columbia University
Advance your personal and professional development during the summer term at Columbia University’s School of Continuing Education. The school offers over 40 different programs with classes geared towards current students as well as working professionals. This summer, explore your options and take a noncredit foreign language class, enroll is a postbaccalaureate program, or design a unique program of study based on your own interests and educational background.
- New York University
Take some time off this summer and check out the Summer Intensive Programs at NYU’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies. These one- to four-week programs provide in-depth educational experiences as well as professional training and career planning. If you can’t manage the time commitment of four or five full days per week, check out the many credit and noncredit classes, weekend workshops and fast track programs designed for time-crunched individuals.
- Marymount Manhattan
Current students looking to get ahead on credits should check out classes offered through Marymount Manhattan’s 2009 Summer Session. This year’s program features dynamic musical theatre and dance training courses as well as a variety of arts, sciences and humanities courses that fully integrate Manhattan’s famous landmarks and exciting culture into the classroom. Some standout classes this summer include Drawing on Location in NYC, Anthropology at Museums in NYC, and Writing New York.
- The New School
Instead of sitting on your couch watching Project Runway repeats on Bravo, brush up on your fashion and design skills by enrolling in the 3- or 6-week summer intensive programs at the famous Parsons Design School, offered by the New School’s Continuing Education department. Parsons also offers a popular pre-college academy for ambitious high-school students interested in painting, photography, illustration and many other areas of design.
- Fashion Institute of Technology
If you have top-notch design skills but need to get your career going or build up your resume, F.I.T’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies is the place to be. The School offers an extensive selection of credit and noncredit certificate programs and summer classes in areas such as fashion merchandising, advertising and marketing communications, production management and business enterprise. Take cues from industry professionals and network with other students to get a jump start in this competitive industry.
- New York Film Academy
This summer, enroll in the New York Film Academy and learn what it takes to be a successful filmmaker, director, screenwriter or actor. Before the new Continuing Education Program starts in September, check out the evening workshops in acting, digital filmmaking, digital editing and screenwriting. NYFA also offers degree programs and intensive year-long courses for those with more time on their hands. If your kids are destined for Hollywood, sign them up for the Summer Camps & High School Workshops in both acting and filmmaking.
Find your muse this summer with Gotham Writers' Workshop. These hands-on classes are taught by professional writers. Choose from courses in fiction (novels, screenplays, poetry) or non-fiction (articles, memoirs, travel writing). Classes are offered live in New York City or online.
