Papal Visit 2008 Will Include Mass at Yankee Stadium

Pope Benedict XVI will arrive in New York City on April 18, 2008 for a three-day visit that will include an historic mass at Yankee Stadium and other events.

Friday, April 18, 2008
  • 9:45 AM -- Arrival ceremony at JFK Airport
  • 10:45 AM -- Visit to the United Nations and address to the U.N. General Assembly
  • 6:00 PM -- Ecumenical meeting in St. Joseph's Church
Saturday, April 19, 2008
  • 9:15 AM -- Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral
  • Noon -- Lunch with Cardinal Edward M. Egan of New York
  • 4:30 PM --Meeting with young people and with seminarians at St. Joseph Seminary in Yonkers
Sunday, April 20, 2008
  • 9:30 AM -- Visit to World Trade Center Site
  • 2:30PM -- Mass at Yankee Stadium

Street Closures and Transit Changes


The NYPD and the MTA have announced some street closures and bus route changes that will be in effect during Pope Benedict XVI's visit from April 18-20, 2008.

Friday, April 18 – Saturday, April 20
  • East 72nd Street will be closed between Madison and Fifth Avenues.
  • No trucks will be allowed on Madison Avenue between East 70th and East 74th Streets.
Friday, April 18
  • Bus service on the M15, M27, M30, M42, M50 M66, M72 and M104 lines near the United Nations will be affected.
  • The First Avenue upper roadway will be closed from 42nd to 48th Streets between 4AM and 3PM.
  • All cross streets from 42nd to 47th Streets will be closed between First and Second Avenues From 4AM until 3PM.
  • 67th and 68th Streets will be closed between Lexington and Third Avenues from 8AM to 8PM.
Saturday, April 19
  • Madison Avenue will be closed between 47th and 53rd Streets until 3PM.
  • Fifth Avenue will be closed between 47th and 73rd Streets until 3PM.
  • All cross streets from 47th Street to 53rd Street will be closed between Sixth and Park Avenues until 3PM.
  • Bus service on the M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M27, M30, M50, M72, Q32, BxM3, BxM4A and B, BxM6, BxM7 and 7A, BxM9, BxM10, BxM11, BM1, BM2, BM3, BM4, and BM5 will all see some changes.
Sunday, April 20

From 5AM until 11AM:
  • West Street will be closed between the FDR and Murray Streets. Surrounding closures will include Church, Barclay, Fulton, Liberty and Trinity Streets.
  • The Jerome Avenue Major Deegan approach will be closed.
  • River Avenue will be closed from 149th to 162nd Streets and Rupert Place will be closed from 153rd to 161st Streets.
  • Bus service on the M6, M9, M20, M22, M30, M72, X1, X10 will be rerouted to avoid the World Trade Center site.
  • There may also be altered bus service routes for the BX1, BX2, BX3, BX19, and BXM4A&B around Yankee Stadium.
  • Extra subway trains will be running before and after Mass at Yankee Stadium.
