Each year, the massive Cathedral of St. John the Divine on Manhattan's upper west side celebrates Gay Pride Week with Spirit of Pride: A Service of Thanksgiving and Celebration. The lively program brings together some of the city's top artists, educators, public officials, and LGBT advocates. The event is always free, and all are welcome.
Gay Theater Honored for 2010
For 2010, in recognition of the extraordinarily wide array of LGBT-themed plays and musicals that were produced this Broadway season, Spirit of Pride will focus on the world of theater. Scheduled performers include Tony and Drama Desk Award nominated Bobby Steggert (Yank!, Ragtime), Brian Childers, Jeremy Lawrence, Mildred "Dred" Gerestant, and Donnetta Lavinia Grays.
Also on the evening's agenda is a panel discussion on the evolution of gay theater, featuring David and Joe Zellnik (creators of Yank!), York Theatre artistic director James Morgan, Tony Award nominated writer Geoffrey Nauffts (Next Fall), and The Temperamentals' author Jon Marans, director Jonathan Silverstein, and producer Stacy Shane.
World's Largest Cathedral
Considered by many to be the largest cathedral in the world (depending on how one measures, and how ones defines "cathedral"), St. John the Divine spans a whopping 121,000 square feet, and is the seat of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. Its construction began in 1892 and has continued on and off for more than a century, earning it the nickname St.John the Unfinished. After suffering damage in a December 2001 fire, the cathedral underwent yet another restoration, and was rededicated on November 30, 2008.
