Honoring World AIDS Day with Music in New York City

Several Concerts and Musical Events Showcase the December 1 Day of Remembrance

In addition to the many vigils and religious services happening around New York City in honor of World AIDS Day on December 1, in 2010, a series of LGBT-themed musical events will take place either on or around the main date, with the collective goal of further highlighting the plight of those living with and lost to HIV and AIDS.

 

  • The Red Ribbon Recital

This operatic recital to benefit Gay Men's Health Crisis and promote HIV awareness will feature soprano Geraldine McMillian, mezzo-sopranos Carolyn Sebron & Patrice P. Eaton, baritones Nathan Bahny & Nathaniel Thompson, tenor Willie Morales, and Dr. Lloyd Arriola on piano.

When:  Saturday, November 27, 2010, 8 p.m.

Where:  The LGBT Community Center, Lerner Auditorium, Room 301, 208 West 13th Street (just west of Seventh Avenue)

Admission:  $20

 

  • Brother, Brother: King for a Day

A slew of vocalists including former porn star Colton Ford will sing selections from the Carole King songbook in this benefit concert for Lifebeat.

When:  Monday, November 29, 2010, 8 p.m.

Where:  Comix, 353 West 14th Street, between Eighth and Ninth Avenues

Tickets:  $40-100 ($48.55 to $119.88 including fees); $100 VIP tickets include premium seating, VIP Barefoot Wine & Bubbly Reception, a $25 Gift Certificate to Platinum Salon, and a Lifebeat T-shirt

 

  • Chely Wright at Borders

Country music star and newly out lesbian Chely Wright will make a World AIDS Day appearance at Borders on Second Avenue, where she will sign books, perform, and conduct a Q&A session. A portion of Borders' December 1 sales will go to Lifebeat and other AIDS organizations.

When:  Wednesday, December 1, 2010, 2 p.m.

Where:  Borders Bookstore, 576 Second Avenue at 32nd Street

Admission:  FREE

 

  • Benson AIDS Series

This esteemed annual concert honors composers who are living with or lost their lives to AIDS. Works by Robert Chesley, Chris DeBlasio, Lee Gannon, Calvin Hampton, and Kevin Oldham will be performed.

When: Wednesday, December 1, 2010, 8 p.m.

Where:  St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery, 131 East 10th Street at Second Avenue

Admission: $10 (suggested donation)

 

  • OUTmusic Awards

Since 2001, the annual OUTmusic Awards have honored openly LGBT recording artists and performers from all genres of the music industry. This year's hosts are comedians Julie Goldman and Johnny McGovern, and the legendary Carol Channing will make a special appearance. Aside from its main awards in nearly 20 categories, special honors will be given for individual excellence to gay icons Melissa Etheridge, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Cyndi Lauper, Chely Wright, Sylvester, and the Village People's Randy Jones.

When:  Wednesday, December 1, 2010, 8 to 10 p.m.

Where:  Town Hall, 123 West 43rd Street, between Sixth Avenue and Broadway

Tickets:  $35-65 ($45.15 to $76.35 including Ticketmaster fees)
