Guide Review - Blue Light Floatation -- A Floatation Tank Experience in New York City
I was pleasantly surprised by my recent floatation tank experience in New York City. As someone who has trouble turning off her brain, I worried that I would get jittery in the complete darkness and silence of a floatation tank. Instead, my hour in the tank flew by and I left Blue Light Floatation feeling relaxed, rejuvenated, and inspired.
A friend recommended Blue Light Floatation when I complained about my stressful week and aches in my neck and back. I was intrigued (like many other first-time floaters, my main point of reference was the William Hurt movie Altered States) and willing to step out of my comfort zone after hearing my friend describe his relaxing experience.
I was a bit taken aback when I learned that the floatation tank facility was located in a guy's apartment in Chelsea. However, a bit of research quickly reassured me that Blue Light Floatation was the real deal and a favorite destination for New York New Agers and celebrities.
I was greeted at the door of what looked like a regular Manhattan apartment by Sam Zeiger, the proprietor of Blue Light Floatation. He gave me a brief tutorial on the floatation process and answered all of my questions. Sam has been running New York's most popular floatation tank since 1985. He has soothed many a nervous first-timer.
Soon, Sam departed and left me in privacy for the floatation ritual. I first showered in the immaculate bathroom and then, clad only in a towel, entered the floatation room. Within the room, the tank is behind a sliding door that keeps the temperature constant and blocks out all noise and light once you're ready to float.
I hung up my towel, stepped into the tank, and pulled the sliding door closed behind me. I then sank into the warm water. The floatation tank is basically an extra-large bathtub filled with a foot of water saturated with high-quality Epsom salt. The water is maintained at skin temperature and is soft and silky to the touch.
Once I was settled and floating comfortably, I clicked the light switch and descended into total darkness. The density of the solution allows you to float weightlessly with no effort or thought required.
The floatation environment is sound-proof and light-proof, allowing the rare opportunity to escape from all stress and distraction. At first, I was very conscious of the dark and my heart beat and wondered how I would make it through an hour. Soon, however, my mind and body drifted into the zone. My thoughts flowed and and I quickly lost my sense of where my body ended and the water and air began.
It seemed like only minutes later that the soft strains of New Age music started, indicating that my time in the tank was over. I emerged, showered again, got dressed, and then relaxed with a soothing cup of tea while mentally processing the experience. It was almost like I had taken a long, restorative nap and was now radiating calm energy. My back and neck felt lighter and I walked back into the chaos of New York feeling rejuvenated and centered.
